It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme currently hosted by The Book Date. It’s a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week, and add to that ever-growing TBR stack.
Ooh boy, this past weekend was glorious. All I did was stay home, read, not wear a bra, read, wine and dine, read, and bookternet like the introvert that I am (apologies for the play-by-play on Snapchat, y’all). It was GLORIOUS. Like I’d mentioned earlier, I’ve had so many social things happening in the last couple of weeks that I was desperate for some quiet, stay-at-home time, to read in peace.
Over the week, I didn’t really read any print, but I did listen to The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson and Brain on Fire: My Month Of Madness by Susannah Cahalan on audio, read Bitch Planet Volume 1, and Alex + Ada Volume 1. All of these were really great, though I’m not yet sure if I will continue reading Alex + Ada just yet. The first volume was really good, I just don’t feel like emotionally investing in another series at the moment, not when I have to still catch up on my existing comic-loves. I also started listening to The Gene: An Intimate History by Siddhartha Mukherjee, and it is so fascinating.
Read Harder meet-up happened on Thursday, which was a blast as usual, but I was kinda annoyed at myself for having to scrounge up books last-minute to talk about (Typically, I have to reign myself in so that I don’t end up gushing about ALL THE BOOKS). Greg was nice enough to give me a copy of this month’s sponsor, My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix, which was exciting, and Lauren came in with three David Mitchell books for me. I feel like this is a rabbit-hole down which I will enjoy falling, so I’ll start the first one this week.
On Friday, after my Readathon winnings arrived, I finally organized my ARCs by publishing date, just because I was starting to panic about having to review all these books that I hadn’t yet read and whose pub. dates I had not been keeping track of. Yay post-its
Saturday: National Readathon Day was a good day of books and booze and good weather. I read Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel and Embroideries by Marjane Satrapi, both of which I enjoyed immensely. Also plugged away at an hour-ish of The Gene, started an ARC of This Too Shall Pass by Milena Busquets, and started The Association of Small Bombs by Karan Mahajan.
Sunday: Finished The Association of Small Bombs, which was phenomenal. I will write a detailed review in the next couple of days when I can put together coherent thoughts. Also finished This Too Shall Pass, which I have lukewarm feelings about. Met a work deadline, and managed to churn out a review. Though it was wayyyy past my bedtime, I also started The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin (there you go Shaina and Naz, you happy?) so that’s happening right now.
That’s all from me folks. I’m feeling good about all this reading, and tomorrow I am finally going to watch Captain America: Civil War with Dilane after work, which I’m pretty stoked for. I’ve only heard good things so far.
What did you guys read over the past week?
