It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme currently hosted by The Book Date. It’s a place to meet up and share what you have been, are and about to be reading over the week, and add to that ever-growing TBR stack.
This past week’s events have left me feeling very angry, defeated, and with a general sense of hopelessness and fear. I’ve been sleeping less, flinching when I hear fireworks in my neighborhood (I live by a ballpark), and getting super paranoid seeing cop cars or hearing sirens (also frequent in my neighborhood). So, I haven’t been reading a lot, but I attended two BLM protests here in Chicago, and it was a powerful experience. To see teenagers stand in rallies and protests, chanting slogans and holding up posters, and my heart goes out to them because they don’t even have the privilege of living a relatively protected childhood because this is their reality. Anyway, I don’t have much to add to what is already being said, so I will not. But allies, please voice your support, donate towards the bail funds of the people that have been wrongfully arrested, call up your local government people, and check-in on your black friends and give them a space to grieve, vent, sit in silence, whatever they need.
This is the only book I’ve felt like reading at the moment. It is pretty intense for my already frayed emotions, but to read anything else makes me feel shitty. The healthy thing to do for me would be to pull back from Twitter for a few days, but I am unable to do that- as an ally, the least I can do is signal boost and voice my support on social media.
Sending love and solidarity to you all.
